Security Warning For Yamba

Times have changed in the sleepy town of Yamba! Gone are the days when you could and would go to work/school and leave the front door of your house unlocked and have no doubts that everything was safe.

If you tried to do that these days it would only be a matter of time before you would come back to things missing. It is a shame how things and the actions of a small few can change the feeling of a small community like Yamba.

It has got to the stage where some residents are even putting barb wire along the top of fences to keep people out.

If you are going to come to Yamba for a weekend break or the approaching Easter hoildays, please ensure you lock your car, apartments and don't leave valuables unattended on the beaches. Just to make sure!

Yamba Holiday Apartment on Fire!

A private holiday accommodation apartment has had some serious damage caused to the kitchen over the weekend.

The Yamba Fire Brigade headed by captain Alan Brooks was called to the apartment situated above Lovers Point and Pippi Breach on Sunday at just before midnight.

It has been reported that on arrival the kitchen was well and truely alight, but lucky for the owners of the property, fire damage has been limited to the kitchen due to the swift actions of the Yamba Fire Brigade. However smoke damage has scared the property inside with damage to walls, bedroom areas and stair cases.

At the time the property was not occupied and it seems that the fire has started from a faulty kitchen appliance.

McDonald's Now Polluting Yamba

Maccas has been open for about a month in Yamba and lets just say that it has already started to pollute our environment. There are photos of food wrapping left around the Golden Arches driveway (100 metres) eitherside. You can see the pics here and here.

It is disapointing to hear that some residents further from the junk food outlet are also finding rubbish out the front of their homes and in waterways!

The question I have is, does McDonalds just attract idiots that have the need to throw their rubbish on the ground when they are done, or if this rubbish was not McDonalds, would be something else?

Eitherway, as the majority of Yamba was against the opening of McDonalds, I think the franchise owner better start looking at what measures they can do to remove their rubbish from the streets of Yamba. Even if he has to be out pounding the streets himself picking up rubbish!

2010 Yamba Rod Run

If you were in town over the weekend you could not have missed the 2010 Yamba Rod Run.

This year was without doubt the biggest event to date with 355 entrants rumbling their way into town. Now an annual event and in its 19th year the Rod Run has come a long way from its beginnings.

The event included a number of cruises around the street of Yamba and surrounding areas, display, trade-stands, a parade, show and shine event, auctions and entertainment for the kids.

There are so many great little holiday destinations that are within a few hours' drive of the Gold Coast. It is a shame that more people that live on the coast really don't take more time out from the busy Gold Coast lifestyle and see these places first hand. Here are 2 of my favourite destinations:

1. Maleny - A small town west of the Sunshine Coast, it is quickly becoming a popular wedding and weekend escape destination for Brisbane and Sunshine Coast residents. Approximately 3 hours drive from the Gold Coast and you will be perched on top of the Sunshine Coast Hinterland and enjoying the crisp mountain air of Maleny. A perfect destination to escape to with that special loved one for a romantic weekend away from reality. The accommodation is perfectly suited for a couple's weekend away with many of the accommodations fitted with private spas that overlook the postcard views of the Maleny valley.

2. Yamba - Without doubt a popular holiday destination, however the number of Gold Coasters that make their way past Byron Bay to Yamba is relatively low. Yamba has something for everyone and shares a lot of activities that the Gold Coast has to offer. One of the biggest attractions to Yamba is the surfing. With over 10 beaches and several point breaks, Yamba can and does produce some of the best surf in Australia. The most famous break is of course, Angourie Point. A right hand point break that has a takeoff over a rock ledge that can leave your ego bruised and body battered.

Yamba and Maleny are within 3 hours drive of the Gold Coast so you will not waste a lot of time travelling to or from either destination. Along the way there are many small little towns that offer some great spots to stop, stretch the legs and enjoy a coffee if needed. If you are travelling to either destination during peak season, make sure you book your accommodation well in advance, especially Yamba accommodation. 3 Point Breaks You Must Surf

Bells Beach - Torquay
Bells Beach is located on the Great Ocean Road just outside of Torquay in Victoria. The main break in Bells Beach is known as the Bells Bowl and is a long right hand point break that works through all tides depending on the swell. A wind direction of West to North-West is perfect for this point.
Bells Beach was featured in the film Point Break and is home to one of the worlds longest running surfing competitions, the Rip Curl Pro, formally known as the Bells Beach Surf Classic. The Bells Beach point break is surf-able from 2 to 15 feet and begins just outside the reef known as Rincon, and continues to the 'Bells Bowl'. Even the most proficient surfer can have difficultly here.

Lennox Point - Lennox Head
Lennox Head is a seaside village on the North Coast of NSW, between Byron Bay and Ballina and is home to Lennox Point. The point works best with a south westerly blowing and a swell ripping around the point from the south-south east. The long, peeling right hand break seems to go on forever and waves sometimes exceed 4 metres when conditions are at their best.
Within a few hours drive of the Gold Coast and home of some of the best surfer in the world such as Mick Fanning, Joel Parkinson and Mark Occhilupo it is a good idea to take a camera if the point is on as you can expect to see this caliber of surfer at Lennox Point.

Angourie Point - Yamba
Angourie Point is a world famous point break that is located in Angourie, a suburb of Yamba. Angourie has been on the map for a long time as one of the worlds best point breaks, in 1962 it had its debut in Surfing World Monthly Magazine and in 1989 Surfing Magazine listed in their top 25 waves in the world.
At is best from February to May with an East swell and light Southerly winds. With a tricky takeoff from above the rock ledge you will find the wave continuously bending towards you as you look down the line, this is due to the wave being wrapped around the rocky point and forms what has been labeled as a high performance heaven by Surfing Magazine.
On a solid day, Angourie Point is intermediating and has claimed lives in big swells. As you walk along the rocks you can feel the power from the waves hitting the rocks beneath you as they shake like tiny tremors with each impact. Plan a trip to surf Angourie Point with some friends to really enjoy the way of life in the village and Yamba. Mt Tambourine is located high above the Gold Coast on a plateau within the Gold Coast Hinterland. Mt Tamborine has developed a booming tourism industry thanks to the increasing popularity of its locally owned and unique restaurants, Mt Tamborine accommodation options and health and spa retreats. For nature lovers and hikers Mt Tamborine also has a number of well cared for trials that snake through rainforest, past cliffs, waterfalls and across trickling streams full of life. Some of the well known tracks include Curtis Falls rainforest track, the Knoll. Mt Tamborine also host a very popular town market that is held on the second Sunday of every month.

Airlie Beach
A part of the Whitsunday Region in QLD, Australia and a departure point to the wold famous Great Barrier Reef, Airlie Beach is slowly steeping out of the shadows as a tourist destination with a lot to offer. Airlie Beach is also known for its deadly marine stingers, such as the Box Jellyfish. To combat this problem, the local council has build a protected area/lagoon on the foreshore to allow taking a swim a safe activity all year round. If you planning on visiting Airlie Beach, plan to be in town for the Blessing Of The Feet Festival started by Father Keith Felgate on Whit Sunday or Pentecost Sunday.

Blue Mountains
One of Australia's most mountainous areas in New South Wales, just outside of Sydney. Rising to 1,190 m above sea level it is home to seven national parks and conservation reserves. The fourth area in New South Wales to be listed as a World Heritage Area by UNESCO on the 29^th of November, 2000. The area is approximately 10,000km square and is rich with Aboriginal culture and history, spectacular waterfalls, pictures sandstone cliffs and of course the blue haze that can be seen from a distance looking down the valleys and is of course how the area got its name.

Yamba
In 2009 Yamba was voted the number 1 town in Australia by the Australian Traveller Magazine. Located on the south side of the might clarence river, Yamba is a beautiful seaside holiday destination. The local culture of Yamba has been influenced over the years as its popularity as a sea-change destination for baby boomers and early retirees who prefer the slightly warner climate without the crowds of nearby places like the Gold Coast and Noosa. Yamba Accommodation is varied with something to suite every traveller. With the main local industry being fishing you have the freshest seafood available in Australia at restaurants or from the local fish and chip shop. Yamba is without doubt my favourite place to take a break in Australia and recharge the batteries.

Yamba is one of those small towns in Norther New South Wales that is just magic to visit and live. Recently voted as the number 1 small town in Australia it is perfect to visit at anytime of year. We have provided you with our 4 recommended things to do while in Yamba.

Visit The Pacific Hotel
The Pacific Hotel is perched on top of Yamba hill overlooking Main Beach with million dollar views of the Pacific Ocean. Stop in for lunch, dinner or just to relax over a few cold drinks and you will see why the Pacific Hotel could possibly have the best views of any Hotel around the world.

A Round Of Golf
The Yamba Golf & Country Club is a beautiful golf course for a small town. With similarities to links style golf on the front nine you will be able to hear to rumble of waves as the sea breeze whips off the ocean and across the course making you think about every shot. On the back nine the tall paper barks line the fairways and make every tee shot feel a little more difficult. The wildlife is abundant on the course with Kangaroos out in numbers in the late afternoons enjoy the shade and the lush grass for dinner.

Visit The Green & Blue Pools
The Green & Blue Pools were formed purely by accident. They were originally rock quarries and the source of rock for the Yamba south and middle wall until workers ruptured an underground spring and found the pools full of water on their return to work.

Time For A Surf
Yamba has 11 beaches in total, however not all are suitable for surfing. Whiting Beach is perfect for relaxing in the sun with the kids or if you would prefer a little privacy from the crowds. Convert Beach is not classified as a surf beach, but with the right swell direction it can produce a thumping shore break. Yamba's other beaches are all surfable at any time of the year, all facing different directions so you should be able to find a beach with a wave depending on the swell and wind directions. Yamba's most famous surfing location is Angourie Point, immortalised in the 1970s cult surf film Morning Of The Earth, the right-hand break attracts surfers from around the world. Angourie has been made one of Australia's first surf reserves, a government initiative that recognises the history, culture and natural splendour of the break and seeks to preserve it for future generations of surfers.
